Local inequities in the relative production of and exposure to vehicular air pollution in Los Angeles

Vehicular air pollution has created an ongoing quality and public health crisis. Despite growing knowledge of racial injustice in exposure levels, less is known about the relationship between production to such pollution. This study assesses burden by testing whether local populations’ vehicular proportional how much they drive. Through a Los Angeles, California, case we examine this relates race, ethnicity socio-economic status – these relationships vary across region. We find that, all else equal, tracts whose residents drive are exposed more pollution, as with less-White population. Commuters from majority-White disproportionately through non-White tracts, compared inverse. Decades racially-motivated freeway infrastructure planning residential segregation shape today’s disparities who produces it, but opportunities exist for urban transport policy mitigate injustice.
